Ocean Mist
1968 40' Pacemaker Power Yacht

This 40' Pacemaker was built out of wood with a pair of Chevy Crusader 454's. The rudder blocks were pretty rotten and the boat was getting ready to sink soon, so the guy gave her to us. We did a pretty good job repairing the rudder blocks and I brought her up to Santa Barbara where we listed her for sale up in San Francisco. This guy named Steve worked out a deal with me where he gave us $3000 down and a Saab convertible. We were going to take $1000 a month for a year. I then taught him how to sell his boat and I told him that if he could come up with $5000 cash, we would take the $5000 cash over the $1000 a month.

He got the boatg paid off and he was taking her up to San Francico, hugging the coast too closely, when he ran through the kelp beds, which sucked a bunch of kelp into the water pumps, overheating both of the engines and burning up one of the transmissions. I was in Big Bear when he called for help so I called Josh and he towed him back.

We got both of the engines running and replaced the transmission. The boat was still in my name and he didn't pay rent and the City made me pay the rent, so I anchored the boat out and Steve never came back. Later the wind blew really hard off shore and blew the boat out to sea. The City went out to get her, brought her into the harbor and they started charging him rent again. He never paid so the City took her out to the ocean, lit her on fire and used her for fire drill training.
